We see thousands of vehicles such as cars, trucks, tractors, bicycles and bikes running over the road every day. These vehicles have different models, features, specifications and of course, tyres. The tyres come with different specifications such as 16inch wheels, 14inchwheelsetc. Tyres are made for different purposes such as normal driving vehicles, sports cars, racing cars, motorbikes, trucks, etc.

Definition of wheel

The wheel is a circular metal or alloy circular object which has a rim and hub revolving around the axle that enables it to move easily over the ground.

Definition of Tyre

Tyres are circular ring-shaped components that surround the wheel rim to transfer a load of a vehicle from the axel passing through the wheel to the ground.  The tyres are designed to absorb shocks by providing flat cushions as the wheel travels on the road. The tyres are made of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, wire, fabric and carbon black and other compounds. Tyres and wheels have cushioning effect to tolerate with steering control.

Types of wheels

There are different types of wheels

  1. Pressed steel disc wheel

This wheel is used in bulkier vehicles such as trucks and buses and used by manufacturers all over the world. It has a pressed steel rim fitted over with a steel rim.

  1. Wire wheel

These wheels are light in weight and can be mounted and removed easily from the axle. This wheel is used in tubed tyres. It is a bit difficult to clean these wheels.

  1. Light alloy wheel

These wheels have great strength and are made up of aluminium or magnesium alloys. These will be used in cars. These are produced with the help of machines for better appearances.

  1. Divided rim wheel

The wheels are divided into two halves and are joined with the help of bolts. They are assembled and disassembled easily.

  1. Split wheel

These are used in larger vehicles and are multipiece wheels.

The 16-inch wheels and 17-inch wheels are also one of the types of rimmed tyres.

16-inch wheels are part of tyres that have larger sidewalls that work as a cushion against the sharp edges of the road. While 17- inch wheels give a sportier appearance to the car by improving the stability and cornering. 16- inch wheels are cheaper, produce less noise, have better fuel economy and feel comfortable.

Properties of Tyres

The different properties of tyres are

  1. The tyres help in absorbing the vibration produced by the uneven surface of the road by producing cushioning effect for a smoother ride.
  2. The tyres are designed with proper lead on their surface to avoid skidding on the wet road.
  3. The tyre should have good load carrying ability as it moves on an even and uneven surface so it should absorb all the shocks and vibrations.
  4. The wear and tear of wire should be uniform.

Function of Tyres

The tyre performs several functions:

  • The tyre should transfer the braking and driving load to the road
  • They should support the load of the vehicle
  • Cornering power is provided for the smooth steering.

Types of tyres

Tyres are of majorly, two types – traditional tubed tyres and tubeless tyres.
